Picnic coolers may be small or large, depending on the amount of food and beverages to be carried. The most common ones hold approximately six to eight soft drinks, or a few sandwiches, or several containers of food.
Picnic coolers are often depicted in pictures as wicker baskets, or old-fashioned, rigid, heavy containers about as attractive as a safe. Today's coolers, however, are soft-sided, come in an array of colors, and have more pockets and storage compartments than a suitcase.
The picnic coolers available today are well-insulated, and designed to keep hot foods hot and cold foods cold. Some even have separate compartments just for this purpose, so that one no longer needs to pack two separate coolers.
Some have containers designed to fit that specific cooler, so that the food can be packed in such a way to where everything will remain in its appointed place. In this way, there is little or no danger of something that should definitely remain chilled (such as potato salad) getting pushed away from the cooling source.
Some not only come with their own food containers, but also come equipped with everything--plates, bowls, cups, and silverware. One only has to pack the food go.
